Peter Barlow with the engineer James Henry Greathead built a tunnel from Tower Hill to Vine Lane (off Tooley Street), called Tower Subway. The tunnel was just over 6 feet in diameter. It opened in 1870 with steam operated lifts and a 12-seat carriage was wound from end to end by wire rope. A steam engine operated the rope and carriage. Steam engines also worked the lifts. This was the very first tube railway in the world, but it was not electric and not successful. Breakdowns were frequent and the tunnel was converted to a foot tunnel with stairs after just 3 months. It was closed in 1894 when openening of the nearby Tower Bridge made the tunnel redundant. The tunnel now holds water mains.
